Who is Kris, the Rider?

A woman named Kris Greffard poses next to her motorcycle, packed and ready to go.

I grew up on motorcycles- primarily sitting on the gas tank or falling asleep on the back. I didn’t start riding until I was 20 when I bought my first bike, a 1998 Kawasaki ZX6R. I passed my class 6 and learned how to ride fast in a straight line.

I became a police officer at 24 and was assigned to the traffic section when I was 29. It was a humbling experience going from my “crotch rocket” to an 1100 lb Victory Cross Country. That bike beat me up and spit me out on the police motorcycle course. Eventually I had a light bulb moment and learned how to dance on that machine. Riding fast is easy, riding slow takes skill. Off duty- I traded my Ninja for a Victory and still own that black beauty to this day.

At 30 I became an escort rider. As the lone female rider on a team of 10 guys, I had to bring my “A” game to be welcomed, respected, and trusted. I learned the importance of discipline and precision. My safety relies on my colleagues equally as much as theirs does to me. Highlight thus far- being the escort for the Duke and Duchess in 2016.

At 34 I was invited on a 3-night ride with a group of female police officers who rode together off duty. My first thought: 8 alpha women- this should be entertaining! Was I ever wrong! The trip was EPIC! The ride was great but the connection we shared was unforgettable. These women have become some of my closest friends and are far more than a riding group, but ladies who support, encourage, and inspire one another in all facets of life.

At 36 I was exposed to the world of adventure riding. I was cross trained on the Suzuki V Strom and became proficient at slow maneuvers on and off road. I fell in love with the versatility of Adventure Tour bikes and bought a 1000XT Adventure. That bike has taken me on long distance rides, back road adventures, and introduced me to motorcycle camping. It is comfortable, light, nimble, and offers a ton of luggage space. I love this bike!

Riding has had a massive impact on my confidence, independence, and social network. It has allowed me to go places I’ve never been before (on and off road) and do things I would likely never have had the opportunity to do. Riding has provided me an outlet- wind therapy. “Gale” never lets me down.

Knowing what riding has brought to my quality of life and the amazing people that I am surrounded by as a result- Why wouldn’t I want to share that with other women?
